PLACE AND HEALTH
INFORMATICS
A space dedicated to my work leveraging the power of location to transform health
Hi, I’m Ian
I’m a dedicated geospatial health scientist with over 15 years of experience leveraging geospatial technology, data visualization, and advanced spatial analytics to improve health research and practice. My geography, international studies, and public health education helped launch a career supporting organizations across local, state, and federal government, as well as the academic and corporate world. I think location has the power to transform health and I want to do all I can to help make that happen.

What I Do
Yes, I make maps…but I also do a whole lot more. I develop new geospatial tools and methods that make it easier for health professionals and researchers to incorporate location analytics with health; build and manage geographic information systems (GIS) so that health organizations have the tools they need to serve their populations; research and experiment with data visualizations so that geospatial health data can be shared in the most informative and effective way possible; and teach others about the principles of health geography and how to use the various health GIS tools and analytical methods needed to leverage the power of location to transform health.
Why I Do It
The places in our lives are one of the primary determinants of our health and it’s of critical importance that we have the tools, technology, and data to fully understand this relationship. Place and health informatics is the application of geospatial science, practice, and technology to the field of health informatics so that we can better understand the relationship between place and health. This integration of location intelligence into health informatics supports the advancement of individual health, population health, and public health which can lead to healthier communities and improved health outcomes for all.

Maps and More Blog
There’s so much that can be said about place and health informatics, health GIS, and geospatial health science I figured why not have a blog. My goal is to update this as often as I can (which I admit might not be all that often) with my thoughts, examples of good work, and some tips and tricks I’ve picked up along the way. Here’s a list of the categories that you can read about in my blog:
